Seahouses limekilns. 2015-11-1 Lime burning at Seahouses harbour appears to date from a lease of 1768 which granted rights to quarry for lime at North Sunderland Snook, mine the local coal seams, and to erect kilns to serve the coastal trade.
This is a well-preserved group of late 18th century lime kilns standing on Seahouses Harbour. They were used between 1795 and 1858. It is built from large sandstone blocks. The lime was loaded directly onto boats in the next door harbour and sent to ports along the east coast of Scotland.
The lime kilns closed in 1860 when herring fishing became a more lucrative industry and for a time Seahouses prospered. The harbour was expanded in 1889 to accommodate the huge fishing fleet. An independent railway was built as part of the North Sunderland Railway which linked Seahouses with the East Coast Main Line.
The four lime-kilns, which are still visible were built to support the trades. Although the coal and lime industries began to decline during the 19th century, the harbour usage reached it's peak, with an abundance of fishing vessels, colliers and other vessels utilising the main piers.
